Georgian Court University is undergoing some big changes. They will move 104 students from Maria Hall, a 59-year-old residence, to fully renovate the building. The decision follows mold issues that have affected students for nearly a year.
The university is investing $1.5 million to address these problems and improve the hall. If more funds are needed for repairs, the school is ready to allocate them.
Students in Maria Hall first faced disruptions 11 months ago when mold appeared in shower rooms. The university conducted a full engineering evaluation last summer after mechanical problems arose. Although remediation efforts allowed some students to return, officials decided larger repairs were needed, leading to the building’s closure for the spring semester. This decision was made to avoid further displacing students.
Currently, all affected students have been reassigned to other residential halls. Maria Hall typically houses up to 219 students and is mainly for first-year students. To support those impacted by the move, affected students will receive half off their housing costs this semester. This discount totals $1,716, reducing their usual cost from $3,432 to $1,716.
Looking ahead, the plan is to have Maria Hall ready for students by the fall semester. It will be a fresh start for those returning, promising an improved living space.
Georgian Court University has a rich history. Founded in 1908 by the Sisters of Mercy, it began as a women’s college and started enrolling men in the 1990s. Today, the university has about 1,600 undergraduate students and 600 graduate students, continuing its mission to provide a quality education.
These developments reflect a growing trend in universities addressing aging infrastructure and health concerns. A recent survey showed that about 45% of students have experienced housing issues, underscoring the importance of proper maintenance and safety in campus living conditions.
As renovations continue, students remain hopeful for a better living environment in the near future.
