A new research study highlights the emergence of a tectonic fault beneath the Atlantic Ocean, raising concerns about potential earthquakes and tsunamis. This study, published in Nature Geoscience, indicates that a previously unnoticed geological process may be at work.

Scientists have long wondered why Portugal experiences severe earthquakes despite its distance from major fault lines. A notable example is the catastrophic 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, which reached a magnitude of 8.7 and caused thousands of deaths and tsunamis as far away as the Caribbean. In 1969, another earthquake off Portugal’s coast, measuring 7.8, resulted in 25 fatalities.

According to Professor João Duarte, a geologist at the University of Lisbon and the study’s lead author, the unique characteristics of these earthquakes have puzzled researchers for years. “These quakes occur on flat plains, far from traditional fault zones,” he explained. After the 1969 earthquake, scientists began to suspect something unusual given the earthquake’s subduction zone-like traits, despite the absence of an actual subduction zone.

Subduction zones, where one tectonic plate sinks beneath another, are notorious for producing immense earthquakes. In contrast, the Atlantic has been viewed as a stable area where plates generally move apart.

Duarte’s team examined seismic data and utilized computer modeling on a region known as the Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, located southwest of Portugal. They discovered evidence that the Earth’s mantle— the layer beneath the crust—is undergoing a peeling process, known as delamination. This suggests that the oceanic crust in this region is behaving unusually. “It’s like the sole of a shoe coming apart,” Duarte noted.

Interestingly, this delamination process is rare in oceanic contexts. Over millions of years, water infiltrated the rock, weakening it and causing sections of the mantle to sink deeper into the Earth.

The implications of this discovery could be profound. Duarte’s findings suggest that a new subduction zone might be forming in the Atlantic, potentially leading to the reunification of Africa, Europe, and the Americas into a single supercontinent in the distant future. However, the immediate threat lies in the possibility of future seismic activity.

“Big earthquakes are going to happen again,” Duarte cautioned, emphasizing that coastal regions across the Atlantic should prepare for the potential impacts. “We may not know exactly when, but it’s essential to be ready.”

Amidst rising concerns about earthquake preparedness, experts stress the importance of proactive measures. According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, nearly 50% of Americans live in areas vulnerable to earthquakes, yet many lack adequate preparation. Understanding and acknowledging seismic risks are crucial steps for communities in at-risk locations.
