Joe Seiders, the drummer for indie rock band the New Pornographers, has been arrested in California. He’s facing serious charges related to possessing child sexual abuse imagery.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, two incidents led to his arrest. On April 7, an 11-year-old boy claimed that a man tried to film him in a fast food restaurant restroom. Just days later, more reports suggested that a man was frequently entering and leaving restrooms with young boys at the same location.
Seiders was apprehended at the scene, and police later searched his home, vehicle, and phone. They found evidence linking him to the reported incidents and additional crimes, including child pornography. He has been charged with annoying or molesting a child and invasion of privacy. His bail is set at $1 million, and he is expected in court on April 22.
The New Pornographers responded to the situation, expressing shock and horror. They have cut ties with Seiders and extended their sympathies to those affected by his actions.
The New Pornographers, formed in 2000, have been a staple in North American indie music. They gained notable success with their 2014 album "Brill Bruisers," which reached No. 13 on the U.S. charts. Seiders joined the band after longtime drummer Kurt Dahle’s departure and has performed on their last three albums.
This troubling news comes at a time when such incidents are increasingly scrutinized. A recent report from the U.S. Department of Justice highlighted a 150% increase in child sexual abuse imagery cases over the past decade, stressing the urgent need for awareness and prevention efforts.
If you or someone you know is affected by this situation, resources are available. In the UK, the NSPCC supports children, while adults can contact Napac for help with childhood abuse. In the U.S., the Childhelp abuse hotline offers assistance, and in Australia, Kids Helpline is available for young people.
