Recently, a new Dunkin’ Donuts opened in South Los Angeles, but not everyone is thrilled about it. TikTok user JustanLAgirl shared her thoughts in a viral video, pointing out the unusual setup: customers can only order through a drive-thru or a touch screen. There’s no indoor seating.
“They want our money, but they don’t want us inside,” she said. Many agreed, noting that the location is in an area with a high crime rate. In fact, the LAPD reported over 10 homicides this year in the nearby 77th Street district, accounting for a significant portion of citywide murders despite the area’s small size.
Commenters echoed her concerns. One user asked, “Do you blame them?” suggesting that the design choice was due to safety issues. Comparatively, JustanLAgirl promoted a local coffee shop, South LA Cafe, which offers indoor seating and a better atmosphere. “It’s clean and beautiful,” she said.
This situation reflects a growing trend among businesses to limit indoor access in areas facing security concerns. As of now, robberies in the 77th Street area have increased by nearly 39%, while aggravated assaults are up 25% in just a month, defying the overall decline in violent crime across Los Angeles.
Some experts believe that these trends may accelerate the shift towards drive-thru models in urban settings, particularly where safety is a top concern. As more businesses adapt to these conditions, there might be a long-term impact on how stores operate in inner-city neighborhoods.
Despite these challenges, it’s essential to consider community needs. Local feedback shows a desire for spaces where people can gather and socialize safely while enjoying good food and coffee. This could lead to future discussions about balancing business models with community expectations.
