The universe is a vast, ever-changing place. Long after stars fade away, what will remain? Scientists have pondered whether remnants like black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs can exist forever. Recent research dives into this fascinating question.

A team at Radboud University in the Netherlands, including black hole expert Heino Falcke and quantum physicist Michael Wondrak, has explored how black holes might lose mass over time through a process called Hawking radiation. It turns out even black holes aren’t permanent. They emit particles and can shrink gradually.

But what about neutron stars and white dwarfs? These dense objects can also create particles through their strong gravitational pull, even without an event horizon like that of black holes. This research looks at how quantum fields behave around these stars as they evolve.

The scientists used quantum field theory to model these compact stars. They treated them as perfect spheres with consistent density, surrounded by nothing. This simplifies things, allowing them to focus on how the intense gravity might create real particles from the vacuum of space. Some of these particles can escape into the universe, while others might be pulled back in, adding heat to the stars.

Interesting patterns emerge. Denser stars emit energy faster. For example, neutron stars and stellar black holes have similar lifespans, whereas white dwarfs take longer to evaporate. This suggests that the more compact an object, the quicker it ceases to exist.

Walter van Suijlekom, one of the researchers, emphasizes the collaboration of astrophysics, quantum physics, and mathematics in this study. By exploring these extreme scenarios, they hope to gain a deeper understanding of the universe’s mysteries.

In the grand scheme, nothing is permanent. Even the seemingly eternal components of the universe will eventually fade. The universe may appear static over short timescales, but it’s always in motion. As gravity and quantum physics interact, everything with mass will ultimately transform into fleeting streams of energy.
