New Study Reveals: Space Travel Could Speed Up Stem Cell Aging by Up to 10 Times!

Traveling to space can have tough effects on the human body. Astronauts face serious changes, from bones losing density to swelling in the brain and even shifts in their genes. Research indicates that spending time in space could speed up aging.

A well-known study followed twin astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. While Mark stayed on Earth, Scott spent 340 days in space. The results were striking. Scott experienced DNA damage, cognitive decline, and his telomeres, which protect chromosomes, shortened. Some of these changes remained long after he returned to Earth, as shown in a significant 2019 study published in Science.

Recently, new findings published in Cell Stem Cell revealed that stem cells also age faster in space—by a factor of ten. Dr. Catriona Jamieson, a leading researcher at the Sanford Stem Cell Institute, noted that this accelerated aging could hinder the body’s ability to heal. Such deterioration is concerning because it could lead to serious conditions like cancer or heart disease.

As interest in space travel grows, particularly with government missions to the moon and private spaceflight ventures, understanding these health impacts becomes crucial. Insights from space could even help scientists learn more about aging back on Earth.

The study involved collecting stem cells from bone marrow donated by hip replacement patients. These cells were placed in small, transparent containers called nanobioreactors. Half stayed on the ground, while the other half flew to the International Space Station on SpaceX missions. In total, the samples spent about a month in microgravity. Researchers tracked the cells’ behavior through a CubeLab, monitoring them daily.

The data retrieved from this experiment allows scientists to better understand how space affects cellular aging. This knowledge could shape future space missions and help improve astronauts’ health.
