Recent discoveries about iPhone hacking techniques have raised alarm bells. These methods, once used only on select targets, are now being deployed en masse. One of the most concerning tools is called DarkSword, which has been found on compromised websites. This technique can quietly hack into any iPhone visiting those sites. While it doesn’t affect the latest iOS versions, many users remain at risk, particularly those still using iOS 18.
Research teams from Google, iVerify, and Lookout unearthed DarkSword recently, highlighting its potential to steal personal data just by visiting a popular webpage. “A vast number of iOS users could have all of their personal data stolen,” noted Rocky Cole, cofounder of iVerify. As of last month, almost a quarter of iPhones were still running iOS 18, making them vulnerable.
Shockingly, DarkSword appears linked to a Russian state-sponsored espionage group. Analysts found it used on websites that seemed legitimate, like news outlets and government pages in Ukraine. This technique also turned up in attempts to compromise phones in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Malaysia.
Interestingly, the developers of DarkSword left the code publicly accessible, which means any hacker could download and use it. Matthias Frielingsdorf from iVerify emphasized how easy it is for anyone to adopt and misuse this tool.
On the bright side, Apple is taking steps to protect users. The company stated that its security teams work daily to update devices and keep data secure. They’ve also released emergency updates for older devices. Apple advises users to keep their software up to date and consider using Lockdown Mode for extra protection.
