Mobile phone video has surfaced that challenges Israel’s explanation for why its soldiers fired on ambulances and a fire truck on March 23, resulting in the deaths of 15 rescue workers. This footage, shared by the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), shows the vehicles moving with both headlights and emergency lights on before they were shot at.
Initially, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that they targeted “suspicious” vehicles that advanced towards troop positions without any lights on. However, witnesses, including a surviving paramedic, assert that the ambulances were clearly marked and had their lights fully operational.
In a powerful statement to the BBC, paramedic Munther Abed stressed, “Our main duty is to offer ambulance services and save lives. No more, no less.” He emphasized that their teams are civilian and have no ties to militant groups. This draws attention to the ethics of engaging in combat near civilian rescue operations.
The tragic loss of the paramedics has stirred emotions globally. PRCS President Dr. Younis Al-Khatib described the heartbreaking last words from one of the fallen workers: “Forgive me, Mum, I just wanted to help people.” His call for accountability and an independent investigation highlights the ongoing debate about the protection of medical personnel in conflict zones.
According to a report from the UN, the dangers for emergency responders have increased significantly in recent years. A recent study from the World Health Organization found that attacks on medical personnel occurred in over 20 conflicts worldwide in 2022, increasing by nearly 30% from previous years.
The IDF has promised to look into the incident further after the paramedics’ testimonies raised doubts about its initial version of events. However, there is still a significant lack of clarity surrounding the military’s lower claims about potential threats from Hamas and other groups involved in the conflict.
