Today, Chris Drury, the President and General Manager of the New York Rangers, shared that the team has made a big trade. They’ve acquired defenseman Calvin de Haan and forward Juuso Parssinen from the Colorado Avalanche. In return, the Rangers gave up Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey, and the rights to unsigned draft pick Hank Kempf. With this deal, New York now has eight picks in the upcoming NHL Draft.
Calvin de Haan, 33, has played 44 games this season for Colorado, scoring seven assists. He’s been a solid presence on the ice, ranking fifth among Avalanche players in both hits (59) and blocked shots (58).
During his 13 seasons in the NHL, he’s played for several teams, including Colorado, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Chicago, and the Islanders, tallying 24 goals and 124 assists for a total of 148 points in 676 games. De Haan consistently showcases his defensive skills, recording over 100 hits and 100 blocked shots six times in his career. He has a positive rating in eight different seasons, which shows his impact on the ice.
Hailing from Carp, Ontario, de Haan has also made his mark in the playoffs, appearing in 38 games and contributing five points. He has represented Canada internationally, winning silver medals at the 2017 World Championship and at the World Junior Championships in 2010 and 2011.
Juuso Parssinen, 24, has played 37 games this season for both the Avalanche and the Nashville Predators, scoring four goals and seven assists for a total of 11 points. He reached a milestone by playing his 100th NHL game on November 17 against Vancouver.
Originally from Hameenlinna, Finland, Parssinen has accumulated 48 points—18 goals and 30 assists—in 126 NHL games with Colorado and Nashville. Last season with the Predators, he set personal bests in games played (45), assists (19), points (25), and game-winning goals (3). He also scored eight goals, marking his highest tally to date.
On the international stage, Parssinen has represented Finland in several tournaments, including the 2021 World Junior Championship, where he helped his team secure a bronze medal.
Parssinen was drafted by the Nashville Predators in the seventh round, 210th overall, in 2019, proving that talent can be found at any point in the draft.
