Newman’s Partington, Smith, and Murray Shine in State Poetry Contest: A Celebration of Talent!

On May 1 in Sterling, three talented students from Newman Central Catholic High School earned recognition in the annual Illinois State Poetry Contest. This event celebrates the creativity of young poets from grades 6-12.

Ryan Partington took home first place in the “Poems That Sing” category, which applauds poetry that could easily be transformed into song lyrics. Ryan, a senior, showcased his talent with a piece titled “Repeated Words and Unchanging Radios.”

Brooklyn Smith, a sophomore, secured third place in the President’s Challenge Award category. Her poem, “Dream,” touched on the theme of aspirations and hopes, capturing the essence of what dreams can mean to young minds.

Matthew Murray, also a sophomore, received an Honorable Mention in the same category with his poem “Fleeting Memories of Him.” His work reflects on transience and the emotions tied to memories.

This marks the third straight year that students from Newman Central have excelled in the Illinois State Poetry Contest. The competition invites both public and private school students, as well as home-schooled individuals, to participate.

For students in grades 9-12, there were seven categories to compete in, each with specific themes, line lengths, and rhyme schemes. Winners received cash prizes and a chance to be featured in the annual Fresh Ink anthology. Notably, winning poems can advance to the prestigious National Manningham Trust Student Poetry Contest.
