Foreign investors looking to enter Fiji’s waste sector need to heed local laws and community concerns. Minister Lynda Tabuya emphasized this during discussions about the proposed $1.4 billion waste-to-energy incinerator project in Vuda-Saweni. A technical review committee is set to meet next week to evaluate the project’s viability.
“We welcome investors, but everything must align with our laws and involve public consultation,” Ms. Tabuya stated. This proposal has sparked significant public interest, reflected in over 3,000 petitions against it and 207 submissions expressed to the Department of Environment before the deadline.
While there is notable opposition, some local support exists, which Ms. Tabuya acknowledged. “We need a comprehensive view,” she added.
Experts have pointed out that Fiji’s waste management crisis affects many, especially communities in informal settlements lacking proper disposal systems. Current statistics indicate that over 50% of waste in Fiji is not disposed of properly, leading to urgent environmental and health concerns.
Ms. Tabuya reiterated the importance of evidence-based solutions, urging that any approach, including waste-to-energy, should address the pressing issues at hand.
