Oregon State’s Nguyen Anh Minh has just been named the West Coast Conference’s Freshman Men’s Golfer of the Year. This recognition highlights his impressive performance throughout the season, including a recent second-place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships.
Anh Minh has played 20 rounds this season, finishing under par in 15 of them. His average of 69 strokes per round is on track to set a new record for Oregon State. The young golfer from Hanoi, Vietnam, has had three top-10 finishes, including a win at the Bandon Dunes Collegiate. Notably, he shot a remarkable 10-under 61 during the first round of that tournament, tying the record for the best round in Oregon State history.
Rylan Johnson, a senior and also a key player for the Beavers, earned an honorable mention in the conference. He’s averaged 72.42 strokes this season, participating in all 35 of the team’s rounds. He has three top-10 finishes as well, with his best result being a third place at the Bandon Dunes Collegiate. In his career, he’s played 144 rounds—a record that places him third in Oregon State history.
In recent years, college golf has seen a surge in competitiveness, with young talents like Anh Minh rising to the top. According to a survey by the NCAA, more student-athletes are breaking records and achieving lower averages than ever before, emphasizing the growing strength of college golf programs.
