Nick Cannon recently opened up about his political beliefs on his show, Big Drive. Joined by model Amber Rose, he made a striking comment, labeling the Democratic Party as “the party of the KKK.”
Rose shared her perspective, saying that Democrats don’t care about Black people or people of color, arguing that Republicans do. Cannon quickly agreed, adding, “People don’t know that the Democrats are the party of the KKK. The Republicans are the party that freed the slaves.” He emphasized that he doesn’t strongly identify with either party and quoted W.E.B. Du Bois, saying there’s really just one party with two names.
Rose mentioned she’s not loyal to any party but supported Donald Trump in the upcoming election, stating that he seemed like the better choice. Cannon supported her view, enthusiastically commenting on Trump’s actions, saying, “He’s cleaning house” and drawing an analogy to a club charging high fees for entry.
It’s interesting to note that while Cannon’s remarks about the KKK and the parties have a basis in history, it’s more nuanced than he suggests. The KKK was indeed formed during the Reconstruction era, and while some of its founders were Democrats at the time, the political landscape has drastically shifted since then. The Republican Party was established in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, and Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which freed slaves in Confederate states.
In recent polls, many Americans express dissatisfaction with both parties, showing that Cannon and Rose’s sentiment resonates with a growing number of voters seeking alternatives outside traditional party lines. According to a 2023 Gallup poll, about 40% of Americans identify as independent, illustrating a significant shift away from the traditional Democratic and Republican labels.
As the political landscape evolves, voices like Cannon’s and Rose’s highlight a desire for change and a call for deeper discussions about race and party evolution in America.
