Nick Cassidy is making a fresh start in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and he’s finding it easier than he expected. He describes the transition from Formula E to hypercars as “like a bit of a holiday.”
In 2026, Cassidy will race for the factory Peugeot team in the WEC while also keeping his commitments to Citroen in Formula E. This is just his second season in the WEC. He previously drove a Ferrari 488 GTE in 2022, the last year of the GTE Am class.
While hypercars have their complexities, such as hybrid systems mixing electric motors with traditional engines, Cassidy finds them less complicated than the systems in Formula E. “It’s probably 30% now of what we have in Formula E,” he noted, showing confidence in his ability to handle this new challenge.
Cassidy has a solid racing background. Before moving to Formula E in 2021, he excelled in Japan’s racing scene, securing titles in Super Formula and the GT500 class of Super GT. He notices that modern hypercars are slower than the LMP1 prototypes he used to race, which impacts driving style.
“The mechanical grip and downforce are lower in hypercars,” he explained. “You feel like you’re driving on eggshells.” This observation emphasizes how different the hypercar experience is compared to what he’s accustomed to in GT500 racing.
As Cassidy prepares for 2026, he faces a busy schedule. The ticking clock adds pressure, especially with Formula E’s Gen4 powertrain development ramping up. “I’m trying to balance both programs,” he admitted. Peugeot has been understanding, helping him fit training and meetings into his packed calendar.
An insightful factor is how athletes handle this dual commitment. A study reported that elite athletes often struggle with time management when juggling multiple sports. The ability to focus and adapt can make all the difference, and Cassidy seems committed to making it work.
