Alabama’s surprising 31-17 loss to unranked Florida State has left fans stunned. Many are expressing their disappointment, including former head coach Nick Saban.
“The line of scrimmage was dominated by Florida State,” Saban observed on ESPN’s College Football Countdown. “But every team has a chance to improve from Week 1 to Week 2. As a coach, you never truly know your team until after that first game.”
This week, Alabama faces UL Monroe, which gives them a chance to regroup. Saban sees this as a valuable opportunity for growth. “Everyone is feeling the disappointment, but this is when teams make their biggest improvements,” he said.
In their opener, Alabama struggled on the ground, managing only 87 rushing yards—just three yards per carry. However, new quarterback Ty Simpson showed promise, completing 23 of 43 passes for 254 yards and both touchdowns coming from the air.
Defensively, Alabama has work to do too. Florida State racked up 388 total yards, with 230 coming on the ground. The Crimson Tide allowed four rushing touchdowns, a statistic they’ll want to change moving forward.
After facing UL Monroe, Alabama will meet Wisconsin before diving into SEC play against Georgia. They also have crucial matchups against Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, and Oklahoma, all of whom were preseason top 25 teams.
This season is still young, and Alabama has time to correct their course. History shows teams often turn around after early-season losses. For now, the Crimson Tide looks to bounce back against UL Monroe this Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
Looking back, the last time Alabama faced a similarly rocky start, they managed to rally and secure a playoff spot. Could this year follow that trend? Only time will tell, but fans are hopeful for a comeback.
