A Florida jury recently awarded golf legend Jack Nicklaus $50 million in a defamation case against billionaire Howard Milstein and other executives at Nicklaus Companies. The jury’s decision came after Nicklaus claimed that false statements were made about him in a New York court case.

The core of the issue? Nicklaus was accused of entertaining a $750 million deal to represent the Saudi-financed LIV Golf League. Nicklaus, 85, firmly denied this, asserting he never had any interest in such an offer. His attorney, Eugene Stearns, stated that proving damages in defamation cases can be tricky, especially for someone with a pristine reputation like Nicklaus. Stearns mentioned how the false claims suggested that Nicklaus was abandoning the PGA Tour and selling out for money.

The controversy dates back to a meeting in 2021, where Nicklaus was approached about designing a golf course in Saudi Arabia. He learned during this meeting that Golf Saudi wanted him to take on a significant role in LIV Golf but declined, as he wanted to uphold the integrity of the PGA Tour, which is part of his legacy.

Moreover, the defendants implied that Nicklaus was not mentally fit to oversee his affairs and even suggested taking control away from him, which his attorney described as particularly damaging. Stearns expressed relief that this chapter is closing for Nicklaus.

The relationship between Nicklaus and Nicklaus Companies has been rocky. The company once paid him $145 million for exclusive rights to his golf course designs and branding in 2007. Nicklaus resigned in 2017, which sparked further disputes and legal battles about his business dealings and contract violations.

In other recent developments, a Florida arbitrator ruled last year that Nicklaus could now design golf courses without restrictions. In April, a New York judge affirmed that Nicklaus had the right to his name, image, and likeness, despite the company’s ownership of specific trademarks.
