Nigeria Champions Climate Action: Key Highlights Ahead of July Summit – EnviroNews

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) is gearing up to host the Africa Climate Change Summit from July 8 to 11, 2025. This was confirmed by Mr. Nadungu Gagare, the Permanent Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs at OSGF, during a recent dinner event in Abuja.

The dinner, organized by PROFOH Nigeria and V&F Solutions Germany, aimed to strengthen ties between Germany and Nigeria in the renewable energy sector. Gagare highlighted the importance of collaboration between private and public sectors. He expressed the government’s commitment to both local and foreign investments in climate initiatives.

Gagare noted that preparations for the summit are progressing well. The event’s postponement to July 2025 allows for better planning. He emphasized the summit’s significance, stating that climate change affects all aspects of life, including humans, animals, and plants.

Mr. Moses Owharo, Chair of the AICIS Planning Committee, praised the government for prioritizing climate policies. He acknowledged participation from various states like Osun, Kwara, and Niger. “We’re working together to attract investments into Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

During the event, Matthias Vierheilig from V&F Solutions pointed out the challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, particularly in electricity distribution. He stressed that investing in renewable energy could provide sustainable solutions. However, he noted that a major obstacle is the lack of reliable data needed to plan infrastructure projects, such as a 50-megawatt power plant.

As the world increasingly focuses on climate issues, gatherings like this summit can play a critical role in addressing these challenges. According to a recent report from the World Economic Forum, investments in renewable energy sectors could help create over 24 million jobs worldwide by 2030. This illustrates the immense potential for growth in this area.

In summary, with a clear focus on climate change, the upcoming Africa Climate Change Summit has the potential to foster collaboration, attract investments, and drive meaningful action in the face of a global challenge.
