On October 13, 2025, Nigeria kicked off the Net-Zero Nature-Positive Project (NZNP). This initiative aims to tackle climate change and help the country reach net-zero emissions by 2060.
Halima Bawa-Bwari, the Director of Forestry in the Federal Ministry of Environment, emphasized the significance of this project at its launch. She described it as a crucial step towards a future that’s not just climate-resilient, but also rich in biodiversity and inclusive of all sectors of society.
Bawa-Bwari explained that NZNP will enhance coordination within institutions, promote biodiversity, restore damaged ecosystems, and open up investment opportunities focused on nature-friendly and low-carbon growth. The project is more than just a plan; it’s designed to take concrete actions based on Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for climate targets.
“We need to go beyond merely reducing emissions. This program can fast-track our efforts,” she stated.
Elsie Attafuah from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) echoed these sentiments. She highlighted that NZNP aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and aims to protect 30% of the country’s land and marine areas by 2030. The initiative will focus on vulnerable regions, particularly the Niger Delta, to ensure environmental accountability and promote green investments.
Attafuah noted the urgency of the climate crisis, stating, “Communities are already feeling the effects of climate change.” The plan involves partnering with local women’s groups and youth to ensure they play leadership roles in the green transition.
The NZNP is backed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and put into action through partnerships with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNDP.
During the event, Nkechi Aneke-Agnes, Director of Planning in the Ministry of Environment, described NZNP Accelerator as part of the GEF-8 cycle, aimed at fostering sustainable investments and nature-friendly practices.
Dr. Nkemdirim Odoya from the Rivers Ministry of Environment expressed her support for the project, mentioning the unique elephant species in Rivers State and its importance to biodiversity. Similarly, Susan Uyadongha from the Bayelsa Ministry echoed these views, calling the project a perfect match for their sustainability goals.
These concerted efforts show Nigeria’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges, reflecting a growing global trend. Reports from the World Meteorological Organization show that climate-related disasters are increasing, putting more emphasis on the need for immediate action—making projects like NZNP both relevant and necessary.
By promoting sustainable practices, Nigeria could set an example for other nations on how to balance development with environmental conservation in the face of climate change.
