Nigeria recently joined a group of countries, including Eswatini, Jordan, Tunisia, and Honduras, in submitting its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) to the UN Climate Change Secretariat. This happened on September 22, 2025.
Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, praised Nigeria’s updated NDC. He sees it as a major step for the country towards a cleaner energy future. Stiell believes Nigeria’s commitment can spark economic growth, create jobs, and leverage its young population.
He emphasized that every nation is striving to gain from clean energy. By setting clear goals, including targets to reduce emissions and aim for net zero by 2060, Nigeria signals to the world that development and climate action are not at odds.
Stiell also highlighted the importance of inclusivity in the plan, stating that engaging society in climate action enhances its strength.
To provide context, in the past, many countries struggled to blend economic growth with environmental responsibility. Recent reports show that countries that prioritize clean energy often see job creation and investment surge. A study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) found that renewable energy jobs could surpass 24 million globally by 2030.
As Nigeria prepares for the 30th Conference of Parties (COP30) this November, its updated NDC is a call to action for other nations. It illustrates that proactive climate strategies can turn challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a sustainable future.
