A nonprofit in Washington is asking a judge to put a stop to recent changes at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. They are concerned that the Trump administration is making alterations without following important preservation laws. The Cultural Landscape Foundation argues that repainting the Reflecting Pool blue disrupts its historical design. Charles A. Birnbaum, the group’s president, emphasized that the reflective quality of the pool is vital to the connection between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. “A blue basin feels more fitting for a theme park,” he stated.
President Trump, who has closely followed this project, described the area as “filthy” and has referred to the new color as “American flag blue.” He even took a motorcade ride over the drained pool to evaluate it firsthand.
During a recent event, Trump announced that the pool would reopen soon but did not address the lawsuit. He insists that the work is substantial and not just a simple paint job, calling it “highly sophisticated.”
The lawsuit targets the Interior Department and the National Park Service, which oversee many renovations in the city. An Interior Department spokesperson praised Trump’s efforts, claiming he has made the capital a “shining beacon.”
Over the past year, these renovations have included significant projects like bulldozing parts of the East Wing for a ballroom and placing the president’s name on the facades of various institutions. Local parks, such as Lafayette Square, have also been closed for renovations. Many of these initiatives are now facing legal challenges.
