A North Carolina resident has been evacuated to Nebraska for monitoring after being on a cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) confirmed this on Monday. The individual’s identity remains confidential.
Dr. Kelly Kimple, director of NCDHHS’s public health division, emphasized the state’s commitment to public health. “Our team is among the best in the country and ready to respond as needed,” she said. “We are in touch with federal, state, and local officials to ensure the safety of all North Carolinians.”
Currently, there are no confirmed hantavirus cases in North Carolina, and officials say the risk of infection is extremely low. All passengers from the ship will be monitored for symptoms for up to 42 days after their last exposure.
The hantavirus, primarily spread by rodents, can cause severe respiratory issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while infection is rare, it can be serious, with about 36% of cases leading to death. Public awareness and prompt reporting of symptoms are critical for control.
