SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea recently announced the completion of a new housing district in Pyongyang for families of soldiers who died fighting with Russian forces in Ukraine. This initiative seems to be part of Kim Jong Un’s ongoing efforts to honor these soldiers.
State media showcased Kim, along with his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as they toured the new Saeppyol Street, visiting homes of the grieving families. Kim vowed to repay the sacrifices made by what he called “young martyrs” who gave their lives for the nation.
In recent months, North Korea has ramped up its propaganda surrounding its troops in Ukraine. This includes constructing a memorial wall and a museum dedicated to the fallen. Analysts suggest this push aims to solidify unity at home and mitigate any public dissatisfaction.
Reports indicate that around 6,000 North Korean soldiers may have been killed or wounded during their time in Ukraine, with the South Korean National Intelligence Service highlighting that approximately 600 had died as of last year. This data points to the heavy toll this conflict is taking on North Korea’s military.
Expert opinions note that these deployments provide North Korean forces with valuable combat experience and access to Russian military technology, potentially enhancing their weaponry’s effectiveness. This alignment between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin serves both leaders in their confrontations with the West.
The construction of Saeppyol Street coincides with North Korea’s upcoming major ruling party congress. Analysts anticipate that Kim will outline significant domestic and foreign policy goals, likely aiming to reinforce his grip on power.
As this situation unfolds, it reflects a complex relationship between North Korea and Russia, especially against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions.
