North Koreans Join Forces with Russia: Unveiling Their Unique Battle for Influence

North Korean soldiers are fighting alongside Russian troops in the Kursk region of Russia. They have specific areas assigned to attack but do so with little support from armored vehicles, unlike their Russian allies.

According to Ukrainian soldiers and U.S. officials, when North Koreans attack, they don’t pause or retreat, even under heavy fire. They move forward despite facing mines and other dangers, often advancing in groups of 40 or more. If they secure a position, they quickly pull back instead of holding it, leaving that task to Russian reinforcements.

These soldiers have developed unique strategies. For instance, when facing drones, one North Korean might act as bait to draw fire, allowing others the chance to shoot it down. If a soldier suffers severe injuries, they have been trained to detonate a grenade rather than risk capture. They might hold the grenade’s pin with one hand while keeping it close to their neck as help approaches.

Integrating with Russian troops, the North Koreans function almost as a separate unit. Language, training, and military culture set them apart, making collaboration challenging. Experts, like Celeste A. Wallander from the Pentagon, suggest that this disconnect is partly due to the differences between the two militaries and the Russian military’s lack of respect for partner forces.

This situation raises questions about the effectiveness and coordination of the North Korean soldiers in combat, as they navigate a complex battlefield while relying on their unique tactics to engage in warfare.
