The Community Foundation of North Okanagan (CFNO) is celebrating a significant milestone—its 50th anniversary—by offering 50 Neighbourhood Small Grants in 2025. This initiative aims to empower residents with funds to bring their community projects to life. Each grant can provide up to $500 to foster connection and inclusivity within the neighborhood.

Lisa Deargle, the community coordinator for the Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) program, emphasizes the impact of small acts of community building: “These grants are about empowering everyday people to make a difference right where they live.” From block parties to cultural workshops, the aim is to help neighbors build meaningful connections.
Applications are open throughout April. Past projects have showcased a range of creative ideas:
- A celebration for Ukraine Independence Day that united newcomers and residents.
- Outdoor movie nights where families enjoyed films and food together.
- Indigenous Culture Camps teaching traditional crafts and promoting cultural awareness.
- Workshops aimed at helping women learn bike repair skills.
- Parent connection events that provided support for families with children who have disabilities.
Community projects like these highlight how local efforts can strengthen relationships and foster a sense of belonging.
Deargle mentions, “This milestone year is the perfect time to spark something meaningful in your neighborhood. No idea is too small to make a difference.”
This program is open to everyone in the North Okanagan, regardless of age or background. For more information or to apply, check out the CFNO Neighbourhood Small Grants page.
This type of initiative is vital in today’s world, especially considering recent trends towards community-driven projects. According to a 2022 survey by the Pew Research Center, 81% of Americans believe that community engagement improves personal well-being. Making space for local voices not only builds camaraderie but also revitalizes neighborhoods, ensuring they thrive for years to come.
