The North Star Health Alliance, which manages both the Carthage Area Hospital and the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg, has recently secured a $60 million loan from the state. This support comes after a rocky six months filled with financial struggles. The New York State Department of Health had halted funding due to the organization’s lack of transparency regarding the use of prior funds.
In January, the situation got worse when the CEO resigned, and over 120 employees were laid off. By February, North Star declared bankruptcy. Fortunately, the new loan, provided through the state’s “Health Facility Restructuring Pool,” could help stabilize the organization just as they wrap up a $15 million emergency financing plan from the state to navigate their bankruptcy.
State Assemblyman Scott Gray expressed relief about the loan, stating it’s a step from crisis toward stabilization. However, the North Star Health Alliance is still actively seeking a long-term healthcare partner, a process that might take several weeks or months.
