Northwood University’s Mock Trial program shined at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational on October 26. Both Timberwolf teams showed their skills against tough competition, which included schools like the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.
One team ended the weekend with a solid record of 5-3. They claimed victories over Rochester, Miami, and Eastern Kentucky but faced a close loss to the University of Michigan. The second team finished with a 4-2-1 record, securing wins against the University at Buffalo and Bellarmine University, while battling hard in close rounds against Northwestern and the University of Cincinnati.
Northwood’s professionalism did not go unnoticed. Before the awards, competitors chose one program that best displayed fairness and respect. Northwood was honored as the runner-up for the Spirit of AMTA (American Mock Trial Association) Award, with Northwestern taking the top spot.
Individual recognition also highlighted the team’s achievements. Maze Gusa stood out as the only participant at the entire event to earn Outstanding Attorney Awards on both the Prosecution and Defense sides. Such a feat is quite rare in early-season competitions.
Northwood’s team for this tournament included talented students like Gabriel Laske, Excellent Abikphi, Bella DeLong, and many others who contributed to their success.
Mock Trial Advisor Dr. DeLois Leapheart praised the students, stating, “Their winning records reflect their preparation and the respect they showed to competitors. We are incredibly proud and excited for what’s next.”
Before this event, Northwood also performed well at the Michigan State University Invitational on October 19. Several first-year students took part in their first collegiate tournament, working alongside experienced members. Maze Gusa and Barrett Tefft both earned Outstanding Attorney Awards, boosting team morale early in the season.
These early successes signal a promising journey ahead for Northwood as they gear up for the winter invitational season and the crucial qualifying tournaments for the American Mock Trial Association.
Mock trial competitions not only sharpen students’ legal skills but also build teamwork and communication. With 74% of employers valuing these skills in graduates, Northwood is clearly setting its students up for future success in the legal field.
