The Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and Dan Church Aid (DCA) program in Malawi is kicking off a new five-year strategy that emphasizes climate action and environmental care. This initiative aims to enhance their existing work in humanitarian efforts, reducing inequality, and preventing gender-based violence.
Stephan Jensen, the country director for the NCA-DCA in Malawi, highlighted the importance of addressing environmental issues. He noted that neglecting environmental degradation has been a significant oversight in their previous strategies. “We’re excited to delve into this new area,” Jensen said on March 14, 2025.
The new strategy includes collaboration with religious leaders and community groups to encourage sustainable practices, such as tree planting and climate change mitigation efforts. This aligns with a growing trend where organizations are realizing the need for urgent action against climate issues. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, over 60% of people in Malawi report witnessing environmental changes impacting their communities. This new approach addresses those concerns head-on.
Halima Daudi, the Deputy Minister of Gender and Social Welfare, spoke positively about the new plans. She mentioned that the government appreciated previous initiatives. “We saw real benefits in vulnerable rural areas after events like Cyclone Freddy, and we are optimistic about the upcoming strategy,” she explained.
Incorporating environmental stewardship not only fulfills an organizational need but reflects a larger global movement towards sustainability. Many governments and NGOs are now prioritizing climate action, recognizing its intersection with poverty and social injustice. The effectiveness of this strategy could set a precedent for similar initiatives across the region.
As the NCA-DCA begins this journey, it promises to be a significant step towards fostering a sustainable future in Malawi, placing environmental responsibility at the forefront of social change.
