Notre Dame Quarterback Steve Angeli Enters Transfer Portal: What This Means for His Future

Notre Dame is set to have a new starting quarterback for the upcoming season as Steve Angeli has entered the transfer portal. Angeli, who played in last year’s Sun Bowl and contributed to the Orange Bowl victory over Penn State, will leave the team as a graduate transfer.

With Angeli’s departure, coach Marcus Freeman will look to either CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey to take the lead. Both quarterbacks logged limited game time last season, participating in just four plays during a blowout win against Purdue. Starting the season at Miami, followed by a challenging home opener against Texas A&M, will be a significant leap for either player.

Freeman recently expressed a desire to narrow the quarterback competition down to two players. He believes this will streamline preparation as they move into training camp. “It’s tough to have a three-quarterback battle,” he said. “We need to determine what’s best for our program and our quarterbacks.”

During the spring game, Angeli had a decent showing—completing 8 of 11 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown—though he didn’t dominate. On the other hand, Carr performed well, completing 14 of 19 passes for 170 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Minchey, too, had his moments with 106 passing yards and a rushing touchdown.

Choosing Angeli could have seemed like a safer pick due to his experience as a backup. Yet, the decision to shift towards Carr and Minchey reflects a strategic move by Freeman. With both quarterbacks healthy and showing promise, it now falls to them to prove their readiness without Angeli’s support.

Recent statistics indicate that teams often experience improved performance when they invest in developing young talent instead of leaning on familiar, but perhaps less dynamic, options. A 2023 survey showed that over 60% of college football coaches believe relying on fresh talent is key to team success in today’s competitive environment.

Freeman’s strategy aligns with this trend. Fans and analysts are eager to see if his choice will pay off. In recent social media discussions, many are excited yet anxious about the upcoming season. The choice of quarterback can define a team’s performance, and Notre Dame fans are looking for a strong start.

As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Carr and Minchey. The pressure is on, but it also opens the door to a fresh beginning for Notre Dame’s football program.
