Jokic’s Commitment Amidst Disappointment
MINNEAPOLIS – After an unexpected playoff exit, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic remains loyal to his team. He stated, “I still want to be a Nugget forever.”
At 31, Jokic has two years and $121.9 million left on his contract, with the second year being a player option. This usually creates uncertainty for a star player, but Jokic could secure a four-year extension worth around $293 million this summer. He reiterated his desire to stay with the Nuggets.
However, Jokic isn’t pleased with how the season wrapped up. Denver, which finished the regular season with 54 wins, fell in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves, who were missing their top player, Anthony Edwards, for the last two games. Jokic expressed his frustration: “We just lost in the first round. I think we are far away from title contention.”
This playoff series was tough for Jokic. While he scored 28 points, had 10 assists, and grabbed 9 rebounds in their final game, he struggled overall. He shot only 39% in the first four games, a stark contrast to his usual performance, where he has flaunted a 56% career shooting rate. “A lot,” he admitted when asked about the blame he takes for the loss. “I needed to play better.”
Jokic’s partner, Jamal Murray, also faced challenges. Although he had a career-best regular season, Murray struggled against defender Jaden McDaniels and was limited to just 33% shooting in the series.
The Nuggets rely heavily on their dynamic duo of Jokic and Murray for their offense, which was the best in the league at 121.2 points per 100 possessions. Yet now, the team must consider further adjustments. David Adelman, in his first full season as head coach, is not blamed by Jokic, who said, “It’s all us.”
Despite injuries impacting their roster—like Peyton Watson and Aaron Gordon—Jokic emphasizes accountability. “Did we need them? Definitely. But if they are not here, we cannot think if, if, if,” he said.
Interestingly, recent social media trends show fans rallying behind Jokic’s commitment, sharing clips of his best plays and rallying for better support from the front office.
As the Nuggets reflect on this season, they face important decisions. Jokic’s loyalty is clear, but will the organization rise to meet the challenge? The offseason will be crucial for their future aspirations.
