Nvidia recently announced that some of its new RTX 50-series graphics cards have a “rare” manufacturing flaw. This issue means some cards are missing specific render units, which can slightly affect performance. Initially, Nvidia named three affected models: the RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and RTX 5070 Ti. Now, they have added the RTX 5080 to that list.
Ben Berraondo, the global PR director for Nvidia GeForce, stated, “Upon further investigation, we’ve identified that an early production build of GeForce RTX 5080 GPUs were also affected.” If you own one of these affected cards, you should reach out to your board manufacturer for a replacement.
When asked about other models, Berraondo confirmed that no other Nvidia GPUs were affected. He specifically noted that the upcoming RTX 5070 is fine. He also assured that any cards produced after this issue has been fixed should not have any problems. Nvidia was not aware of this flaw before launching these GPUs.
Here’s Nvidia’s detailed statement:
We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D, RTX 5080, and 5070 Ti GPUs, which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.
Although the number of affected GPUs is small, it adds to the series of issues Nvidia has faced with its latest graphics cards. Fortunately, they are offering replacements to those impacted.
