Nvidia Set to Restart H20 AI Chip Sales to China Soon After U.S. Government Reassurances

Nvidia is looking to restart sales of its H20 chips to China. This is a big deal for the company, especially after facing tough U.S. export restrictions. Earlier this year, the U.S. government told Nvidia that it needed a special license to sell these chips. The H20 was designed to navigate past those restrictions.

Recently, Nvidia noted that the government signaled it would grant those licenses. CEO Jensen Huang has been vocal about how these export controls hurt Nvidia’s opportunities in China. He mentioned that Nvidia’s market share in China had dropped nearly 50% due to these restrictions.

This shift in policy comes after Huang met with President Trump, where they discussed job creation and America’s tech leadership. Last month, both the U.S. and China agreed on a preliminary trade framework that may ease some export limits from both sides. This could make it easier for Nvidia to regain its footing in the Chinese market.

Huang also introduced a new graphics processing unit (GPU), the RTX PRO, designed for smart factories. Whether this chip is also compliant for exports to China is still unclear. Reports suggest Nvidia is working on a new AI chip for China that may not be as advanced as the H20.

Ray Wang, a research director at Futurum Group, shared insights on this development. He pointed out that lifting the ban on H20 chips is a significant win for Nvidia. It could boost their standing in China again. Alongside the new AI chips, this could lead to more growth for the company.
