New York City has decided to join the World Health Organization’s global outbreak response network, known as GOARN. This move comes on the heels of President Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO.

Interestingly, recent surveys indicate that a majority of Americans support remaining engaged with global health organizations. A July 2022 poll found that 62% believe participation in the WHO is beneficial for the U.S. This suggests that while some political leaders may turn away from international cooperation, public sentiment leans toward collaboration in addressing global health challenges.
With the COVID-19 pandemic illustrating the urgent need for a united front against health threats, New York City’s decision may reflect a wider recognition of the vital role global partnerships play in public health.
