NYC’s Historic People’s Beach Bathhouse Reopens After 54 Years with a Stunning M Renovation!

The Jacob Riis Park Bathhouse, once a vibrant hub for beachgoers, has been closed for 54 years. It’s finally getting a major makeover with an $88 million restoration, transforming it into “The Rockaway Ocean Club.” This revitalized space merges modern amenities with its historic charm.

Originally opened in 1932, the bathhouse was a popular summer destination, hosting countless visitors in its grand changing rooms and dance halls. However, it closed in 1972 and fell into disrepair, enduring years of storms and neglect. Thanks to efforts by NYC Parks and private partners, it’s now being restored to its former glory while also adapting to modern needs to prevent flooding.

The revamped area features a redesigned boardwalk lined with food options ranging from coffee to gelato, perfect for beachgoers. A central courtyard aims to enhance the summer vibe, and plans for a rooftop restaurant promise excellent ocean views.

In a unique twist, a boutique hotel with 28 rooms is in the works, allowing guests to stay right by the beach. The project also introduces a members-only beach club, resembling a “modern country club,” with exclusive lounges and a large pool, catering to those looking for added luxury at the shore. Membership fees range from $1,000 for local residents to $3,500 for families from outside the area, sparking conversations on social media about accessibility and exclusivity.

As Riis Park blooms anew, it’s also part of a larger trend in New York, where historic sites are being revitalized. For instance, the New York State Pavilion, a remnant of the 1964 World’s Fair, is undergoing restoration. It faced decades of neglect but is now set for a $56.8 million stabilization project, which could reopen its observation decks by 2026.

This resurgence of historic landmarks in the city not only celebrates the past but also brings fresh life to these spaces. As people react positively to these developments, it highlights a growing appreciation for blending history with modern conveniences.
