On January 21, 2026, Oakland University gained national acclaim for its robust flu vaccination efforts. It won top honors in the 2025–26 Alana Yaksich National College and University Flu Vaccination Challenge, standing out among colleges for delivering the highest number of flu shots in the Medium School Division.
The Graham Health Center has been at the forefront of these efforts, emphasizing the importance of flu prevention and ensuring easy access to vaccinations for students. Ann Rayford, the center’s director, expressed pride in the university’s dedication to student health. “This recognition showcases not just our team’s hard work, but also our students’ eagerness to help in keeping the campus safe,” she said.
Thanks to participation in this vaccination challenge, Oakland University secured a $5,000 grant from Alana’s Foundation, aimed at providing flu shots to students without insurance. This funding is crucial for improving health access and supporting vulnerable populations on campus.
Oakland’s efforts align with the Healthy Campus Initiative, which fosters a health-conscious environment through education and resources. By hosting flu clinics in various campus buildings and offering flexible vaccination options at the Graham Health Center, the university has successfully increased participation compared to previous years.
The Alana Yaksich National College and University Flu Vaccination Challenge began in Michigan in 2014 and has now expanded nationally. It aims to emphasize the importance of seasonal flu vaccines, particularly on college campuses where young adults are at higher risk. JoAnna Yaksich of Alana’s Foundation highlights the role of these campuses in boosting vaccination rates among students, who often fall within a vulnerable age group.
The initiative holds special meaning, stemming from the loss of Alana Yaksich, who tragically passed away at five due to flu complications. Her legacy drives the foundation’s mission to prevent flu-related deaths and educate communities about vaccine importance.
This year, Oakland University proudly displays the Alana Yaksich Memorial Trophy at the Graham Health Center, symbolizing its commitment to health and wellness. Flu shots are currently available on a walk-in basis or by appointment at the center.
