On February 13, the Oakland University Board of Trustees honored three faculty members with the title of Distinguished Professor. This prestigious title—effective from August 15, 2026—recognizes outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and community service.
Meet the Distinguished Professors
Dr. Sergey Golovashchenko
Dr. Golovashchenko, a leader in mechanical engineering, has made significant strides since joining Oakland University in 2014. His research focuses on sheet metal forming and advanced manufacturing. He has authored numerous publications, including 89 journal articles and 69 conference papers, and holds over 51 U.S. patents.
Since joining Oakland, he has secured more than $3.3 million in funding through 68 grants. His research benefits from partnerships with major organizations like the National Science Foundation and General Motors. He also plays a vital role in developing the NSF IUCRC Center for Sheet Metal Forming with collaborators from other universities.
“I am deeply thankful for this honor,” he said. “I appreciate the support from my colleagues and the community here at Oakland University.”
Dr. James T. Hansen
With a background in counseling, Dr. Hansen has shaped current understandings around philosophical issues in mental health. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and written or edited four books. His work has been widely cited, with particular acclaim for his article in the Journal of Humanistic Counseling.
Beyond publication, he is a dedicated mentor. Many of his doctoral students now hold faculty positions nationwide, showcasing his lasting impact on the field. “I’m honored and grateful for this recognition,” said Hansen.
Dr. Jennifer Vonk
Dr. Vonk is a prominent figure in comparative-cognitive psychology. Over nearly three decades, she has produced around 200 publications, collaborating with several zoos to enrich her research and provide unique opportunities for students. She serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Behavioural Processes and is recognized as a Fellow of the Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology.
Her mentorship has significantly impacted her students’ careers, with many achieving tenured positions. “It’s rewarding to be recognized for my work,” she expressed.
The Bigger Picture
The appointments of these faculty members illustrate Oakland University’s commitment to excellence in education and research. A recent survey shows that institutions with strong faculty mentorship programs have higher student success rates. For instance, institutions listed in the U.S. News & World Report frequently highlight the importance of faculty engagement, which fosters a supportive learning environment.
Awards like these spotlight not only individual achievements but also the broader goal of enhancing student education, a vital part of the university’s mission. As Dr. Golovashchenko, Dr. Hansen, and Dr. Vonk lead by example, they inspire future scholars and contribute to the growing prestige of Oakland University as a hub for educational excellence and innovation.
