Oakland University Updates Class Schedules and Cancels Tours Amid Ongoing Hot Water System Repairs

Oakland University is switching many classes to remote or hybrid formats this week as it waits for repairs on its hot water system. The issue was first reported back in November, leading to a campus closure from November 21 to 30. This closure was necessary due to urgent repairs needed for the high-temperature hot water pipe system, which affected heating in several buildings.

Classes resumed on Monday, but according to Provost Amy Thompson, classes in buildings without heat will be fully remote. Those scheduled in heated buildings will have a mix of in-person and remote learning. Some classes and exams might be moved to other facilities like the West Center or the Macomb University Center.

Thompson acknowledged the stress this situation causes, especially for students living on campus. She assured them that the university is working hard to support them as they navigate the end of the semester.

Additionally, the university has canceled all campus tours this week. Repairs are expected to continue until at least December 11, affecting the final week of classes and the majority of final exams.

This situation impacts more than 20 buildings on campus, including:

• Biomedical Research Support Facility
• Dodge Hall
• Kresge Library
• Recreation and Athletics Center
• Wilson Hall
