An Orange County mother faces serious charges after her 14-year-old son hit and killed an 81-year-old man with an electric motorcycle. The unfortunate victim, Ed Ashman, was a Vietnam War veteran and a beloved substitute teacher. He passed away two weeks after the incident while walking home from work in Lake Forest.
The mother, Tommi Jo Mejer, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and several other offenses. Prosecutors allege that she ignored warnings about letting her son illegally ride the e-motorcycle. District Attorney Todd Spitzer stated, “This mother essentially handed her 14-year-old son a deadly weapon.”
The crash occurred on April 16. Eyewitnesses reported that Mejer’s son was performing stunts on the motorcycle when he collided with Ashman. Investigators noted that the electric motorcycle was modified to reach higher speeds, requiring a license and insurance to operate legally.
Prior to the accident, law enforcement had warned Mejer about the dangers and legal issues surrounding her son’s riding. In fact, deputies reportedly spent nearly 30 minutes explaining these risks to her last June.
