Over 350 community members showed up this weekend in Throggs Neck, Bronx, to receive fresh produce, halal turkeys, and chicken. The food was distributed for free by GrowNYC, thanks to a partnership with local organizations and funding secured by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the irony that, despite being close to a major produce market, many Bronx residents struggle to find enough food. She expressed gratitude for local organizations working hard to support families and mentioned that federal funding helped launch GrowNYC’s food hub, which connects neighbors with fresh fruits and vegetables, especially useful before Thanksgiving.
Angela Torres, the President of the Throggs Neck Community Alliance, shared her concerns about food insecurity, noting how rising prices have made it harder for families to access nutritious food. She emphasized the critical role that GrowNYC plays in alleviating this issue, especially after a pause in their partnership due to funding cuts.
Marcel Van Ooyen, CEO of GrowNYC, echoed these sentiments. He pointed out the challenges facing both vulnerable residents and local farmers amid unstable federal nutrition assistance. He described GrowNYC’s “Food for Families” program as a vital response to the growing need for accessible, healthy food.
After losing funding earlier this year, GrowNYC and the Throggs Neck Community Alliance had to halt their food distribution efforts. Thanks to emergency fundraising, they were able to restore this important service.
According to a recent report, around 1 in 8 New Yorkers face food insecurity, a statistic that emphasizes the continued need for community support. Programs like “Food for Families” aim to bridge this gap, ensuring families have access to meals.
