ODU’s Jeff Jones Set for Induction into American University Sports Hall of Fame: Celebrate a Coaching Legend!

NORFOLK, Va. – For over 40 years, American University struggled in Division I men’s basketball, never reaching the NCAA Tournament. That changed in 2000 when Jeff Jones became head coach.

At the time, the Eagles were coming off nine straight losing seasons. But under Jones’ leadership, they quickly improved. Early in his tenure, they won a few Patriot League regular-season titles but kept falling short in the championship games. Then, in 2008 and 2009, the Eagles finally won the Patriot League Tournament. This achievement marked their first trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Jones also led American to historic victories against ACC teams, defeating Maryland and Florida State, both impressive wins for the program. These moments sparked excitement at the university, located in Washington, D.C., and home to Bender Arena, a facility that seats 4,500.

In 2014, the Eagles made another NCAA Tournament appearance, largely thanks to a core team built by Jones. Kieran Donohue, a close associate of Jones, reflected, “We left them with a very good team.” By the time Jones departed, he held a record of 211-183, making him the winningest coach in American’s history.

Now, years after his departure, the university is celebrating Jones. He will be inducted into the American University Sports Hall of Fame, honoring his significant contributions to the program.

Jones stepped away from coaching last February after a heart attack forced him to miss much of the season. Now, he serves as a mentor for all 18 coaching teams at Old Dominion University, where he was hired by athletics director Dr. Wood Selig.

Those who know Jones appreciate his humble nature. When asked about the hall of fame induction, he expressed gratitude, saying, “It’s going to be awesome. It’s very nice to be recognized…” He added that his excitement grew from having family present during the ceremony.

Donohue noted, “Jeff’s coaching emotions were always in full display… But he tries to keep his personal feelings private.” However, he remembered moments when Jones couldn’t hold back his emotions, like when the Eagles won their first Patriot League title in 2008. Jones asked to find his daughter amidst the celebration, and they shared an emotional hug as confetti fell around them.

DeLisha Milton-Jones, head coach of ODU women’s basketball, praised Jones for his support and kindness. “He’s always there when you need him,” she said, highlighting his encouraging messages during tough times.

Donohue has reached out to many former players, managers, and alumni to inform them about Jones’s induction. He emphasized, “I owe so much to Jeff. He helped give me my start.” Donohue believes Jones’s honor is well-deserved and reflects on his impactful 13 years at American.

Jones’s legacy continues to inspire those he coached and worked alongside. His emotional connection with the sport and its people remains strong, making this induction a truly special moment in his long career.
