Ohio Food Banks Face Crisis: Rising Demand and Budget Cuts Complicate Efforts to Feed Those in Need

CINCINNATI — Food banks in Ohio are facing a tough situation. More people are turning to them for help due to rising prices. Kurt Reiber, head of Freestone Foodbank, explains that inflation affects everything from food to housing and transportation costs.

In 2024, the Ohio Association of Foodbanks reported a record number of visitors to their facilities. This trend is continuing into 2025, with a surprising 35% increase in service demand reported already this year across their 20-county area.

Unfortunately, inflation isn’t just emptying wallets; it’s also impacting food availability. Joree Novotny, the executive director of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, mentions that the amount of food provided per pantry visit has dropped significantly.

There are concerns about the future. Governor Mike DeWine’s budget proposal aims to cut state funding for food banks from $32 million to $24.5 million. This 23% reduction could worsen as inflation continues to rise.

“This is worrying,” Novotny said about the potential funding cuts. “If this happens, it will be a real struggle for us.” Reiber added that they are actively communicating with lawmakers to boost funding and address the growing demand for assistance.

The Ohio Association of Foodbanks is asking for $36.98 million in the new budget to help meet this increased need. Discussions about the two-year state budget are ongoing in the Statehouse, with a decision expected by late April.
