Ohio State University: Navigating Scandal and Change
In the 1990s, Rocky Ratliff was a young wrestler studying political science at Ohio State University. His time there turned dark when he was sexually abused by Dr. Richard Strauss, a respected figure in the university’s athletic department. Strauss is believed to have abused numerous student-athletes over decades. “I had inappropriate exams repeatedly,” Ratliff recalls of his visits for a high ankle sprain. He mentions that the exams felt excessive and invasive.
Ohio State has long been a symbol of pride in Ohio, especially with its football team’s historic victories. However, the university now faces serious issues, from scandals to financial struggles. It has paid over $61 million to settle claims from victims of Strauss’s abuse and is currently embroiled in a growing federal lawsuit. Just recently, 30 former football players joined the case, which could lead to further financial strain.
The university’s leadership has also faced controversy. Walter ‘Ted’ Carter Jr., the university’s president, resigned after it was revealed he misused public funds to benefit a personal associate. This instability in leadership is alarming; Carter was the fourth president in just six years.
Beyond these scandals, broader issues plague Ohio State. The university has seen a decline in student enrollment, particularly among international students, due to changes in immigration policies and falling birth rates in Ohio. Since 2006, the birth rate in the state has dropped by nearly 16%.
Despite these challenges, Ohio State remains a significant contributor to the local economy, generating around $19 billion annually and supporting 117,000 jobs. But public perception has shifted. Many now want to distance the university from its notable donors, especially Les Wexner, who has a controversial past linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
Amid the troubles, an academic debate unfolds.
