Ohio State Men’s Sports Clinch Capital One Cup Victory: A Triumph for Buckeye Fans!

Ohio State’s men’s sports teams excelled in the 2024-25 season, clinching the prestigious Capital One Cup. This award recognizes the top men’s and women’s sports programs in the U.S.

The Buckeyes stood out thanks to their strong finishes in seven sports, most notably their football team, which won the national championship. Here’s a closer look at how other teams contributed:

  • Soccer: Ranked third in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
  • Fencing: Finished fourth at the NCAA Championships.
  • Wrestling: Tied for fifth at the NCAA Championships.
  • Tennis: Ranked sixth in ITA standings.
  • Gymnastics: Placed seventh in NCAA standings.
  • Lacrosse: Ranked ninth in the postseason Coaches poll.

These teams collectively earned 113.5 points, outperforming second-place Penn State, which scored 82 points. As a reward, Ohio State will receive $250,000 to support athlete scholarships.

Athletic director Ross Bjork expressed gratitude to Capital One for supporting student-athletes and acknowledged the hard work behind this success. “This year was a testament to the dedication and commitment to excellence our student-athletes show,” he stated.

This is not Ohio State’s first win; they also took home the Capital One Cup in the 2016-17 season, highlighting a strong tradition in men’s athletics.

On the women’s side, Ohio State finished 34th in the Capital One Cup standings, with North Carolina, having won national championships in lacrosse and soccer, taking the cup with 140 points.

In a broader context, college sports have seen growing competitiveness, with notable increases in funding for scholarships and facilities. As schools invest more in their athletic programs, wins like Ohio State’s could inspire other teams to aim higher.
