Ohio State Tops AP Top 25: LSU and Miami Make Their Mark in the Top 5, Florida State’s Comeback, and Alabama’s Surprising Drop

Ohio State has claimed the top spot in the latest AP Top 25 college football poll. The Buckeyes received 55 out of 66 first-place votes after defeating preseason No. 1 Texas. This marks the first time Ohio State has been ranked No. 1 in the regular season since November 2015.

Meanwhile, Texas has dropped to No. 7. This weekend saw a shake-up in the rankings, with two top-five teams losing for only the second time since 1972. In total, four teams in the top 10 suffered defeats. Notably, only three teams maintained their preseason rankings.

Penn State remains in second place, garnering seven first-place votes. LSU, which moved up six spots after beating Clemson, is in third. Georgia and Miami round out the top five.

Oregon received the last first-place vote, followed by Texas, Clemson, Notre Dame, and South Carolina.

In significant news, Florida State jumped from unranked to No. 14 after a 31-17 victory over Alabama. This is Alabama’s lowest ranking in 17 years, a stark contrast to its usual dominance. Florida State’s journey has been remarkable; after finishing 2-10 last season, they are back in the mix.

Utah is the only other new entry this week, coming in at No. 25 after a decisive win over UCLA. This marks their first ranking since last October when they struggled through a seven-game losing streak.

In the age of social media, fans show their reactions vividly. Many Alabama supporters expressed shock at their team’s freefall, while Florida State fans celebrated their resurgence.

Historically, this week marks a rare occurrence; Texas’ drop to No. 7 is the largest fall for a preseason No. 1 since Auburn dropped to No. 8 in 1984.

As of now, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads with ten ranked teams, while the Big Ten boasts six. This concentration of talent hints at intense competition as the season unfolds.

In another intriguing matchup, No. 15 Michigan will face No. 18 Oklahoma this weekend, the first clash since Oklahoma defeated Michigan in the 1975 Orange Bowl for the national championship.
