COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State University is currently looking into a situation involving President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. He resigned suddenly over the weekend after it was revealed that he engaged in “an inappropriate relationship” with a woman seeking resources from the university for her business.
Carter, who is 66, announced his resignation voluntarily. He mentioned to the board of trustees that he made a mistake by allowing her access to university leadership but did not go into detail about the nature of their relationship. He assured that he is still together with his wife, Lynda.
The board’s chair, John Zeiger, expressed disappointment when they learned about the situation. In a letter, he acknowledged Carter’s decision and emphasized the seriousness of the issue and its potential impact on the university.
Before his resignation, Carter had received praise for his leadership. Just last August, he was awarded over $50,000 as a merit raise on top of his annual salary of $1.1 million, along with a sizable bonus of nearly $400,000. His contract was set to last until 2028.
As the investigation unfolds, university spokesperson Ben Johnson stated that a leadership transition plan will be developed soon. Meanwhile, daily operations will continue under Carter’s former executive team, which includes several vice presidents and a chief of staff.
Ohio State is one of the largest universities in the U.S., boasting over 60,000 students and a vast alumni network. Carter had been managing a budget of approximately $11.5 billion for the coming fiscal year. However, it is unclear if the “resources” he granted to the woman involved any financial assistance.
Carter joined Ohio State in 2023, coming from the University of Nebraska. He has an impressive background, including serving as the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.
This incident marks Ohio State’s third presidential transition since 2020. Jennifer Tisone Price from the Ohio conference of the American Association of University Professors emphasized the need for a transparent hiring process for the next president, highlighting the importance of faculty input in maintaining honesty and integrity at the university.
