OHSU Health Unveils New CEO: The Leader Worth the Wait!

After nearly two years, the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Health system finally has a new CEO: Tarek Salaway. He brings with him a wealth of experience from prominent health systems in California, including his recent role at Kaiser Permanente in the Bay Area.

OHSU President Shereef Elnahal praised Salaway’s extensive leadership background, highlighting his success in developing strategic initiatives that enhance patient care. Salaway’s appointment comes after a challenging search process that included interim leaders, notably Joe Ness and Ann Madden Rice, both of whom were temporarily placed until this final selection.

OHSU Health, a major part of OHSU, oversees the university’s hospitals and clinics. The search for Salaway began in early 2024 after the previous CEO, John Hunter, announced his retirement. Salaway is set to officially start on December 15.

In recent years, many health systems have faced turmoil, emphasizing the importance of stable leadership. A study from the American College of Healthcare Executives reports that strong leadership can significantly improve patient outcomes. Salaway’s experience is expected to guide OHSU Health through this transformative period, enhancing healthcare delivery across Oregon.

In his own words, Salaway expressed excitement about joining OHSU Health, reflecting a commitment to the communities it serves. The healthcare landscape continues to evolve, and effective leadership will play a crucial role in navigating its challenges.
