LOS ANGELES – The buzz around Shohei Ohtani is growing as he gets ready to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers this May. Manager Dave Roberts shared his thoughts at a recent fan event, confirming that Ohtani will not pitch during the opening Japan Series against the Chicago Cubs on March 18-19.
Ohtani, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since August 2023, had shoulder surgery on November 5 after a dislocated shoulder in the World Series. Roberts mentioned that Ohtani looks strong and you wouldn’t guess he had surgery.
When asked about his progress, Ohtani said he feels on track. “I’ve been able to work out every day,” he said through a translator, expressing excitement for spring training.
Still, Ohtani is unsure when he will take the mound. He explained that shoulder surgery is more complex than elbow surgery. “I had to work on my range of motion,” he noted, mentioning some lingering effects in the labrum. He expects to learn more after his first bullpen session.
The Dodgers start training camp in Arizona on February 10, and Ohtani’s performance there will help determine his timeline.
In other news, World Series MVP Freddie Freeman has resumed hitting after recovering from ankle surgery on December 5. Despite not being cleared for running yet, he hopes to play during the trip to Tokyo.
Clayton Kershaw is also on the mend. The three-time Cy Young winner began his throwing program following foot and knee surgeries. He had to deal with a persistent toe injury that kept him out of postseason play.
Dodgers fans voiced their support for bringing back utilityman Kiké Hernández, and general manager Brandon Gomes confirmed the team is still considering him. “We’ve never closed the door to Kiké,” he said.
As the season approaches, Roberts is also in discussions about extending his contract. He has been with the team since 2016 and has led them to multiple postseason appearances, including two World Series titles. Despite facing criticism after recent playoff losses, his recent success has quieted doubts.
“It’s good to be liked,” Roberts commented, reflecting on the support from fans and the team alike.
