An Oklahoma principal is being hailed as a hero for his quick actions during a frightening incident at Pauls Valley High School. Kirk Moore leaped into action when a former student entered the school with two semi-automatic handguns. Moore confronted the 20-year-old armed man, Victor Lee Hawkins, tackling him to the ground despite being shot in the leg.
The police chief, Don May, praised Moore, saying, “He undoubtedly saved kids’ lives.” His decisive response likely prevented a tragedy, as Hawkins had plans to harm students and himself, inspired by the infamous Columbine school shooting nearly 25 years earlier.
Surveillance footage captured the tense moments. Hawkins fired several shots but did not injure anyone else before Moore and another staff member managed to disarm him. Hawkins now faces multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill, and is being held on a $1 million bail.
Authorities revealed that hours before the incident, Hawkins took his father’s guns from home, intending to carry out a shooting at the school. Alarmingly, he had planned to kill Moore specifically, stating he disliked the principal.
This incident sheds light on the ongoing issue of school safety. Recent data shows that school shootings in the U.S. have increased sharply in recent years. A report from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security noted that there have been more than 250 school shootings since 2020, which highlights the necessity for effective preparedness in schools.
The Pauls Valley School District has taken significant steps to ensure student safety. They have developed and practiced response plans for emergencies. Moore expressed gratitude for the support he’s received, emphasizing the importance of training and instinct in critical moments.
Moore’s bravery didn’t just surprise those close to the school; former students commented on his character. Spencer Flinn, a former student, shared, “If some student were to get harmed, he would definitely take a bullet for them.”
As schools across the country continue to grapple with the reality of gun violence, Moore’s actions serve as a reminder of the commitment many educators have to protect their students. His recovery is ongoing, and he looks forward to returning to his role, embodying the spirit of resilience that schools strive to instill in their communities.
