Former North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who leads the nation in passing yards this year, has announced his commitment to Oklahoma State. He shared the news with ESPN, marking a pivotal moment in his football journey.
Mestemaker had a standout season at North Texas, clinching a 12-2 record, reaching the American Conference title game, and securing a bowl victory over San Diego State. This was his first year as a starting quarterback after his freshman season in high school.
His decision to join Oklahoma State is tied to his strong relationship with former North Texas coach Eric Morris, who is now the Cowboys’ head coach. Mestemaker highlighted Morris’s ability to develop quarterbacks, citing past success stories such as Patrick Mahomes. “I think Coach Morris is the best play-caller in the nation,” Mestemaker said. This trust in Morris’s coaching is a significant reason for his transfer.
Mestemaker’s impressive performance this past season, with 4,379 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, has garnered attention from major football brands and even NFL scouts. As his football career progresses, he’ll be closely monitored next season, his third in college football.
He chose to prioritize loyalty to Morris, eager to team up with him at Oklahoma State. Morris recently signed a five-year contract, stepping in after Mike Gundy, the school’s all-time winningest coach, was let go.
“I hope my commitment shows other players how special this staff really is,” Mestemaker mentioned. This reflects his dedication and belief in the coaching team.
Mestemaker’s path to this point is quite unique. He didn’t start a varsity high school game at quarterback until Morris offered him a chance. His first college start was in a bowl game after the 2024 season. “I feel I owe him for believing in me,” Mestemaker noted.
Despite looking at a few other schools, he committed to Oklahoma State without visiting any other campuses. He plans to check out the Oklahoma State campus soon, expressing eagerness for this new chapter.
While Oklahoma State has struggled recently, finishing winless in the Big 12 for the last two years, Mestemaker feels confident about their potential. Currently, there are 59 scholarship players in the transfer portal, highlighting the need for significant change within the program.
Mestemaker is optimistic that with hard work and dedication, a turnaround is possible. He said, “This staff never shied away from a challenge. I know there’s work to do, but I’m ready for it.”
