Schools that receive the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award are doing great things for young women. They are making it easier for female students to take AP computer science courses. At OLCHS, every girl who took the AP exam last spring passed and earned college credit.
It’s essential to give young women access to computer science. This helps create fairness in an industry where high-paying jobs are often unbalanced by gender. More opportunities for women in tech also lead to better innovation and creativity. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary for computer and math jobs was $104,200 in 2023. Yet, only 26.9 percent of people in these fields are women.
Dr. Lauren May, the principal of OLCHS, expressed her excitement about the achievements of their female computer science students. She praised the efforts of the AP teachers and school counselors who support these young women. Dr. May emphasized how important it is for students to have chances to earn college credit early through AP and dual credit programs.
