PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jack Hughes is riding a whirlwind of excitement after his gold-medal-winning goal for the United States at the Milan Cortina Olympics. It’s clear his life has changed dramatically, but he’s not quite ready for it all to settle down just yet.
At just 24 years old, Hughes received an enthusiastic welcome in Pittsburgh on Thursday night. The crowd erupted when they recognized his number 86, honoring his Olympic achievement. Fans chanted “Huuuuuughhhes! Huuuuuughhhes!” before switching to “U-S-A! U-S-A!” The cheers caught him by surprise.
“I knew they’d acknowledge me, but Sid Crosby is a huge star here,” Hughes said after the game, where he had an assist despite the New Jersey Devils losing 4-1 to the Penguins. “There are proud Americans in the audience tonight. That’s something I won’t forget.”
It’s not the first time Pittsburgh fans have shown love like this. Sixteen years ago, they did something similar for Ryan Miller, who lost to Crosby’s Canadian team in the 2010 Olympics. Yet, Hughes made a lasting mark on U.S. Olympic history with his goal, ending a 46-year drought for the U.S. in men’s hockey.

“I know it won’t last forever, but it’s really cool,” Hughes reflected. He admitted that the whirlwind has been tough to process. Returning to the regular NHL season feels different after his unforgettable Olympic moment. However, being on the ice has brought him some comfort.
“The best thing for me is getting back to playing,” he said. “It gives me a few hours of no distractions.”
